Anyone running 2008r2?

  • I'm upgrading my system from 2000-> 2008. I just found out that r2 is a totally separate release from 2008.

Since it was just released has anyone had any experiences good/bad?

Alsi what is everyone's take on upgrading to the latest greatest vs older and more stable?

  • 2008R2 is 2008 + add ons, mostly in the BI area. The core of the release is the same

At the point of releasing 2008R2 MS put up their prices, so if you are buying your license now you are paying R2 prices even if you get 2008 (or 2005 for that matter), so that clinches it for me and you may as well go for R2.

  • I had 2008 on my system and created a database for a customer. I backed it up and restored it to their R2 system. I made a few changes on their copy, backed it up and then tried to restore it to my 2008 system. No go. You cannot restore an R2 database to a 2008 instance. I had to upgrade from 2008 to R2. This seems enough reason on its own to go straight to R2. I hope this is of some help in making your decision.

  • Hi Padlock,

SQL server doesnt support backward compatability..2008 R2 is a new realease just like 2000,2005 & 2008

  • Thanks for the replies.

I guess I shouldn't be surprised (although I was) that MS released another version this quickly.

Regardless if I purchase r2 I can always downgrade if I wish although I don't think I will.
