We recently were notified of Microsoft Security Bulletin MS09-043, which concerns a vulnerability in the Office Web Components(OWC). This bulletin refers to MS-Office products as being effected by this problem, however, OWC 11 is installed as part of the SQL Server 2005 install. Does anyone know if this security problem also effects SQL Server and if it does not, why?

I'm not sure. I know SQL Server 2008 is definitely affected. I have asked on one of the patch management mailing lists. I'll post what I hear back.

Has anyone heard anything about this or should we call Microsoft? We really need an answer.

There have been no replies on the patch management mailing list, so I'm guessing no one really knows outside of maybe Microsoft. Since it's concerning a service pack, it should be a free call.
