  1.how can we change the default server name after installing sql2005 ?

  2.how to change the named instance?

  Changing the name of the server :

  1. Change the name of the Windows host

  2. Reboot

  3. Rename SQL Server

  select @@SERVERNAME -- confirm that SQL still thinks of itself as the old name

  GO

  sp_dropserver '<old_name>'

  GO

  sp_addserver '<new_name>', local

  GO

  4. Restart SQL Server

  I don't have experience of renaming a server with named instances....(my guess is the same command does the job, but you should check)

  Please test this first for yourself as I cannot guarantee it always works - it has for me though.
