All,
I want to install Sql Server 2005 on my laptop but it has windows vista home premium. I have windows server 2003 r2 enterpise and standard edition. I want to use this as a training server. Should I install windows server 2003? If so; which version? The only other option is to upgrade to vista ultimate which I don't have and don't want the expense. Besides; I can use window 2003 server for win server training too.
Please tell me what you think.
thank you

How about installing Microsoft Virtual PC?
That way you can keep Vista on your laptop and install Windows Server and SQL Server into a virtual machine.

I thought about that but I don't like vista anyways:)

Thought of using the Express or Developer editions of SQL server? Both can be installed on a consumer OS like Vista. Express is free but is missing some of the features of full-fat SQL, Developer has everything but costs a small amount and has fairly restrictive licensing.
Incidentally, Vista Ultimate wouldn't help at all--it's still not a server OS, and other than the editions mentioned above, you have to use Windows Server to install SQL.

I am installing Sql Server Developer. I have decided to install win server 2003 but not I find that their are new challenges. Win 2003 does not have the sata drivers to recognize my sata hard drive and i dont have a floppy drive. Also, it may not have the drives for my laptop; dell studio 17. ugh But, I have installed Sql Server on Win xp pro without problems to do training and developing; so i really don't need win server it was just a bonus to do some reinforcement training. There was a mention to install Win 7 pro. Any thoughts?

It's really up to you. If you don't like Vista you'll probably not like Windows 7 any better--it's more like Vista than it is like XP.

My main focus is for self training on Sql Server. I will look into win 7 pro to see if it would install without problems. I've been told that it was on the lines of winxp pro.
Thanks for your help.
