Error while installing SP1

  • Hello,

I have SQL Server 2008 Standard Edition installed on a Windows XP machine. I am trying to install SP1 to have the same upgraded. Once the SP1 setup is completed it gives an error "Installation failed for shared components".

    When I checked @@version it shows "Microsoft SQL Server 2008 (SP1) - 10.0.2531.0 (Intel X86)"

I tried to find out the exact error from the log path mentioned at the end of the setup. When I checked "details.txt" (All others were xml files) I found an error line

I am not able to make out what must be the exact error faced by the setup and what all the functionalities will be affected by that error.

Can anyone help in understanding and tracing this error?

    Thanks in advance.

  • I also had same issues where patch update for SQL Server 2008 R2 BIDS (Shared features) got failed due to devenv.exe.config.tmp file.

I looked for this devenv.exe.config file on the server and it was located on another drive hence, I copied devenv.exe.config file to location where setup (SP3 installer) was trying to update and renamed as devenv.exe.config.tmp.

After this started SQL Server 2008 R2 SP3 installer and it has updated patch for shared features successfully. It may require server reboot but, in my case it didn't asked for Reboot.

HOPE THIS WILL WORK IN YOUR ENVIRONMENT AS WELL.

    Thanks
