How do I tell if a server is cluster aware?

  • I do not have a SQL Server Test Cluster. I have no one where I work to assist me.

I am currently running SQL Server 2005 Enterprise. I have 2 separate instances.

One is an Active node instance; SQLCluster1. The other was a working Passive (failover) node instance; SQLCluster2

I was given a requirement to turn the Passive node into an Active/Passive node to house a large database.

Out of my “NEWBIE-NESS”, I evicted the SQLCluster2 node because I thought the TCP Ports weren’t correct. I then rebuilt SQLCluster2 as a Standalone SQL Server per a SQL Server forum (won’t trust them anymore). I then found that I needed to totally remove SQL Server from SQLCluster2. This task was recently completed.

So my question is how do I tell if a SQLCLUSTER2 is cluster aware?

Thank you for your patience with me.

  • Not clear enough. Can you please tell what you are trying to achieve?

Are you trying to create a single node cluster?

If both nodes show up in the Cluster Administrator, your OK.

  • No Sir, I am trying to acheive a 2 node cluster.

  • Would this be before or after the install of SQL Server? Does this mean that both instances will have to be reinstalled?

  • Did you read this link?

  • Thank you, I just read it. Does this mean I DON"T have to reinstall SQLCluster1? That would be a big blessing to me to NOT have to reinstall SQLCLUSTER1.

  • If you have no issues with First node, (ie is ur first server is now acting as single node cluster), you are safe.

  • Ok,

Yes, the first node is working as a single node

Roshan-Joe, You are my hero! 😀
