BackupExec 12.5 Remote Agent and SQL Server 2005

  • For years I have been scheduling SQL Server database backups to flat files (.bak) on disk, informing ICT of the directories they're in and requesting that they be backed up to tape. Recently I was told that our latest version of BackupExec 12.5 Remote Agent won't back up anything at all on a server it's recognised has SQL Server installed. "It sees SQL Server and won't go any further" they said. I've found BEX users online who contradict that (and it seems extremely unlikely to me), but would like to check with other SQL Server people too.

Does anyone have SQL Server 2005 Standard SP2 on Windows Server 2003 Standard SP2 backed up by BEX Remote Agent 12.5 working successfully please? I'm afraid I don't have the specific error messages received by ICT.

Edit - I mean just .bak and other flat files. We don't use the SQL agent.

    Thank you,

    Cath

  • I am not sure of that claim. It sounds almost incomplete. It has been a while since I have worked with Backup Exec, but when I did, it did support backing up SQL servers, but there was a catch (as always). You could back up file directories and what not just fine, but in order to back up SQL databases you needed a separate license for a Backup Exec agent for SQL Server. This was also true for Oracle, Exchange, SharePoint, etc.

Maybe that delineation is what was originally meant.

  • Thanks Joie. That's always been what we've done in the past - avoided buying the Agent by excluding database files from the backup and just backing up the .bak files. This problem has only affected a few new servers, so I'm hoping it's just a bit of a snarl up with the Backup Exec installation.

    Thanks again for your time.
