Big Iron on Windows 2008 R2, Earning its Keep!

,

This screenshot goes in the category of “geek porn”…  It shows an IA64 system with 256 logical processors and 512GB of RAM, running at 72% CPU utilization. It is obviously running SQL Server 2008 R2 on Windows Server 2008 R2, since earlier versions of Windows Server and SQL Server are limited to 64 logical processors.

It is showing an interesting pattern of utilization by the individual processor cores, where many of them are working quite hard, while a few are idle. This probably means that processor affinity was set to limit the number of cores used by SQL Server 2008 R2.

72 % busy
