The primary data files are the ones with .mdf extension. Yes you can add more data files, but then they will be secondary data files and they will have .ndf extension. There is a third type of file .ldf, they are log files.

Secondaries don't have to have the .ndf extension btw. It's just convention 🙂

Thanx for that bit of information.. I never knew about that.. But like you said, the recommended file name extension for secondary data files is .ndf and it's the convention 🙂
