SQL Server MS Certification

  • Hello SSC.com land! 😀

I've been working with SQL Server 2005 for the last 1.5 years and I'd like to actually get MS Certified in SS 2005. I'm looking to see who out there has a certification and what kind of resources, books, sample test questions, plans, and software they used/recommend to obtain their certification.

Thank you in advance for your feedback and help! :w00t:

  • Take a look at this url: http://www.microsoft.com/learning/mcp/certifications.mspx

As for sample questions, most of the stuff that you'll find online (testking and the likes) are braindumps, questions taken from the actual exam papers. Using those is cheating (they're questions you may get) and can get your cert revoked. So stay faaar away.

iirc the self-paced training kits have practice exams on the cds.

  • As Gail says above the self training kits are OK.

Have been working through these myself to get my MCITP DBA qualification. The book for the MCTS (Exam 70-431) is pretty good, infact passed the MCTS after working through it.

The book for exam 70-444 is pretty much repitition of the MCTS book. Not started the last book yet 70-443 but at a glance there is more repitition in it also.

Practicle experience will give you the best knowledge for passing but what you would do and what microsoft would like you to do can be very different.

  • If you never have taken a MS SQL exam, I would recommend that you also purchase either MeasureUp or Self Test Software Test Prep package. After over 40 Microsoft exams and several Oracle, I find the best way to prep is with test prep software (I use MeasureUp). I start by taking the practice exam in a practice mode. I do not look at the correct answers if I get it wrong. But use the question I get wrong to identify areas I need to study. I repeat the cycle until I am scoring above 80%. then I do the exam mode. Once that is above 80% I take the test. Happy to say, I seldom fail an exam any more.

With that said... No body is creating the practice exams for SQL 2008 Developers... which is my next series... so I am on my own.

  • Thank you all to those that have responded so far. I'm still researching everything you all have given me. 🙂

I just wanted to respond to the previous post about the Self Test Software Practice Exams. In researching the practice exams there it looks like there may be stuff for the 2008 upgrade exam so you may want to check that out. 😀

In the meantime, if there are any additional thoughts, tips/tricks, please keep them coming. The advice so far has yielded so much and is much appreciated. :w00t:
