In a multiple instance server, either standalone server or a node of a cluster, does each instance have to have different port number?
Any input will be greatly appreciated.

In a multiple instance server each instance needs to have different Port
In a Cluster the Instance must have same port reserved on all the nodes

DB2008 is correct.
You can set the ports in the Configuration Manager, or you can let SQL dynamically manage ports for named instances. The default is 1434 for the default instance, but this can be changed as well.

What if we enforce two instances to have the same port number? That is what I mean in my original post, "have to". I know it is a stupid question. I just did not try it.
