SQL Server Express 2008 on Windows Server 2008 R2

  • Afternoon!

I'm struggling to get SQL Server Express 2008 to install on a Windows Server.

I've got it running fine on Windows 2008 Server, but the new server that's just arrived has Windows 2008 Server R2 on.

The technet "stuff" says that you must apply service pack 1 to make it work properly, but I can't get the non SP1 version to install so I can apply the service pack.

Is there a download of Express 2008 (with advanced tools) with Service Pack 1 already applied?

    Any thoughts?

    Cheers

    Ben

  • I am not sure with this, but though it might helpful.

I never came across a SQL Server Edition with SP1 installed (something like embedded).

There are many binaries of SQL Server Express the binaries from the developer division comes with SP so here is the link.

    Gift Peddie,

Does that file (if downloaded) will install the Express edition with SP1 installed automatically, the user does not need to install SP1 separately?

It comes with both Express and the SP1 here is the binary from the SQL Server team it now also comes with SP1 per the link below.

  • Thanks Guys

I've downloaded the SP1 version of the basic installer, but I can't try to install until later on due to some hardware testing on the new machine.

    I'll try later...

I'm assuming that this version of the installer means I need to download a copy of SSMSE if I want to admin the instance directly on the box?

    Thanks

That is correct and you can always register the Express with other instances on the network if your browser services is on.
