hi, i just don't get the difference between a sql 2008 sp1 (build 2531) and a new sql 2008 r2 (build 1600).
1) is the 2008 sp1 better than the 2008 r2? wich one is the most "patched" or "updated".
2) if i have a sql server 2008 sp1, do i have to "upgrade" it to 2008 r2? When i try it the "upgrade from sql 2000 or sql 2005 to sql 2008" option doesn't display the current 2008 sp1 instance.
any help is welcome.

(1) The newest version is always going to be the most "Patched/updated". There are a TON of new features in SQL 2008 R2. Just check out this site: What's New
(2) Yes it would be an upgrade. This is the matrix for the support upgrade paths: Paths. You might also review the information on upgrading here

Do note that R2 is not a patch or service pack. It's a new version of SQL that you will have to purchase licences for if you want to use.
