Greetings. I was able to install 2005 express on my laptop, which has XP professional. I was able to get a full copy of 2008 from work, and was wondering if I will be able to install it on XP professional.

Here are the hardware requirements which includes operating system you can only install SQL Server 2008 Standard in XP pro, however you could always install the Developer edition which is the same as Enterprise edition.

Greg ... I have installed the Developer Edition on a desktop using Windows XP pro ... Be sure to check ALL the requirements, for example you needl dot net framework 3.5 or higher. Ditto with Visual Studio 2007 and yes there is an express (freebie) of that available from Microsoft... and be prepared the installation will take a considerable period of time.

Thanks to both for the quick replies. It seems to have worked. When I ran the disk, it asked me if I wanted to generate a key for a free trial version, or use the key that was already populated, I am assuming by my company. What is the trial version, and is there a way for MS to tell if I install it on my personal computer, since they certainly must know who owns the key?

The trial is the eval version which is also Enterprise edition in features but installs in both XP and Vista but it is good for only six months. Check below for details. So you need to get the Developer edition or standard to do permanent install.

Greg please do not take this as anything other than some friendly advice. Un install the company version. Go to AMAZON.COM and for less than $50 USD, purchase the developer edition. Load the developer edition onto you lap top. In this way there is NO question about licensing or software piracy.
The developer edition is actually the Enterprise edition with all of its capabilities, and all you have to do is to agree NOT to use it in production, there is no time limit on how long it can be used.

Thanks for the advice bitbucket. I should have clarified that I have two laptops in question. The first one, and the one on which I did the install, is my work computer, and is owned by my company and used only for work purposes. The second one, and the one sparking my question about if they would be able to find out, is my personal one. And, I think you answered my question. I guess I can live with the express version on my own machine, as all I use is the query analyzer. Thanks for your input.

Actually SQL Server Express tools edition comes with limited management studio and if you want fulltext and import export wizard then get the one with advanced services.
