Should the backups of the database and transaction logs occur close to one another? Right now we've got our weekly, full backups of the database occurring on Friday mornings and the transaction logs occur late Sunday evening.

That depends on the amount of activity in the database and the amount of data that you can afford to lose in a disaster.
My general rule of thumb for backups on databases using the FULL Recovery model is Weekly Full, Daily Differential and Hourly Log backups. In this configuration my recovery is then Full, Differential, and up to 23 logs for a total of 25 steps. For a busier system I'd do more frequent Differential and logs.

Hi,
You can have the Weekly Full Backup in place. But along with this I would suggest you to have atleast daily Transaction Log backup everyday evening sometime. This will minimise the loss of data in some difficult unwarrent time.
