Service Pack for SQL 2005

  • All,

My server is currently at 9.00.3042 SQL 2005 Ent Edition SP2 level. We would like to update it to SP3,I would like to know if I should update it too 2005+SP3 (Q955706) [9.00.4035] or SP3 with the most recent 2005 SP3+Q978915 (Cumulative HF8)bring it to [9.00.4285] level.

This is the site that I have got the version numbers from http://www.sqlsecurity.com/FAQs/SQLServerVersionDatabase/tabid/63/Default.aspx

The reason why I am asking this is because is it better to stick to Basic Service Pack patch without any cumulative, and give some time before updating cumulative patches.

OR Update to service pack with most recent cumulative at one go.

  • Well, from the MS item for SQL Server 2005 SP3 CU2 page:

A supported cumulative update package is now available from Microsoft. However, it is intended to correct only the problems that are described in this article. Apply it only to systems that are experiencing these specific problems. This cumulative update package may receive additional testing. Therefore, if you are not severely affected by any of these problems, we recommend that you wait for the next SQL Server 2005 service pack that contains the hotfixes in this cumulative update package.

So I'd say "it depends" on if you have experienced any of these problems.

  • test the SP3 first on a test sql server to make sure it doesnt break anything!

"Ya can't make an omelette without breaking just a few eggs" 😉

  • Thank You folks. I would go ahead with SP3 without the cum's first
