In simpel words it is SQL Server on Cloud.Your database will be on the Cloud servers and not at your data center thus reducing the Infrastructure/management/administration/Memory/etc etc issues and costs. You just pay for what you use.

So, is SQL Azure more of a service given by Microsoft? Is it possible to have an Enterprise Private Cloud and maintain the SQL Azure within the Private cloud?
Is this something that we can maintain ourselves, or its basically a maintenance free service because all maintenance is done by Microsoft, but then that means, the database is within their cloud?

Sql Azure is SAS provided by Microsoft. It is primarily used to develop solutions by using Cloud Computing.
