which version of SQL Server2005

  • Hi,

In my shop we will shortly be upgrading to SQL Server 2005 so as a DBA what edition of SQL Server 2005 will I need to buy to install on my PC to administer numerous databases on numerous servers. I know the Express version is free but obviously as a DBA I will need to schedule jobs and this doesn't have this feature.

    Thanks in advance.

  • Hi Peter,

MS SQL Server 2005 has 5 editions.

    1. Enterprise

    2. Standard

    3. Workgroup

    4. Developer

    5. Express

It entirely depends upon the business nature of your shop, which edition u ll use. You can go through the below link or BOL to know more abt the editions.

In general, we are using Standard edition because it is less costlier than enterprize edition and provides the functionality we need.

  • [font="Verdana"]Selecting the edition depends on the usage you are going to perform on SQL Server.

If you are going for HA solution then you can go for standard or enterprise edition. Check the link below for features supported on different SQL 2005 editions

  • Hi SCC,

    Thank you for your reply.

I'm still a bit confused probably because of the way things work around here but the business has already purchased SQL Server 2005 and has it deployed on a bunch of servers. Me as the DBA is now expected to get the software myself and download it to my PC and start doing DBA tasks to support the databases on those servers.

What I have done is downloaded the SQL Server 2005 trial edition in the interim but I need to purchase some software that will enable me to just administer the databases out there. There will be no databases per se on my laptop as I just need the ability to logon to the various database servers and create databases, setup jobs etc.

So what can I use for this?? Any suggestions.

  • First of all, if your company has already purchased and deployed SQL Server 2005, they should provide you with the CD's or DVD's used to install SQL Server 2005 on those servers. You would then load the necessary client tools from that media on to your PC.

If they expect you to actually purchase your own version, then I'd recommend purchasing SQL Server 2005 Developer Edition. The cost is only $50.00, and is well worth the investment.

  • If you only need to administer the SQL servers then installing the client tools only is free. And this is just my humble opinion but its a bit rich if they want you to purchase software to do your job. Find another employer ! Its hard enough coming in on the end of a deployment as it is, without the hassel of having to buy a copy of their software as well.
