Hi
I am using perfmon for 2 days at a time every month. What is your experience in how long you use? Is it recommended to do longer than 2 days?
I do it only 2 days, fearing that it may be a heavy overhead on the server. I have option only to run it right on the server
Also, is there any tool to interpret the csv file from perfmon and give an analysis?
Thanks
Dan

It really depends on the number of counters you're collecting and the frequency with which you collect them. Personally, only 2 days a month wouldn't be nearly enough. We use Micrsoft Operations Manager and we're collecting performance data all day, every day and keeping a year of it online.

You can move the CSV files into a database. There, you've got all the tools you need for interpreting the data.

Is MOM where you right click on Object->Reports->Custom Reports->.rdl files to choose the report?
If yes, how do you store & analyze it?
Thanks for the idea of moving CSV to DB. I'll import it in.
Thanks

No, Operations Manager is a completely seperate product from Microsoft. But it does work off of the performance monitor counters like most other monitoring products.

Do I have to install MOM only on the server or can I do it on a Client and monitor the server?
Right now I collect 30 parameters from PerfMon, and manually analyze them. I would like to do more, and concerned if it will down the performance of the server, because I have to run it on the server.

to analyze this data you can use:
- excel
- other handmade tool

Can you give an example of the 'hand-made tool' - you mean write your own application to process it?

Operations Manager needs it's own server. Then you register your server with it and it starts monitoring. It provides a client interface to retrive the data collected.

Thanks Grant. I will be installing MOM on the client computer. I prefer not to install any SW on the server as much as possible

You can use @nalytics Performance Free Data Collector for Microsoft SQL Server & Windows
Server, this tool can help you to solve your performance problems, I have tested it works
excellent and it is very easy to configure and implement it.
