SQL 2008 Mirroring w/SQL 2005 Witness??

  • I've setup mirroring between two SQL 2008 database servers. I would also like to configure a Witness server for automatic fail over. Does the witness server need to be the same version as the mirrored server??

If so, would it be possible to setup the witness and partner on the same server? I've seen documentation to suggest that one server can act as both partner and witness. However, I cannot configure multiple endpoints, when trying to setup an additional endpoint (on a different port) I get the message that only one endpoint of that type is supported.

So, anybody out there running mirroring with a witness server of a different version? or witness and partner on the same server?

Any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Matt

  • Found a workaround. Only one endpoint per instance, setup multiple instances to accommodate multiple endpoints on the same server.

  • Could we use 2005 as the witness when we have 2008 as other partners of the quorum?

You can use 2005 as a witness -
