Effectively testing Cumulative Updates?

  • I've installed the CU 6 SP3 on my SS2005 development/test server.

How do I effectively test this SS instances to see if nothing was broken? As well, there may have been security operations that hardened the server, and some settings might be reset post CU fix hot patch. I want to check these as well (or at least important ones).

  • Effective testing would be much the same as the QA process for releasing an app to production.

Run through your test plans, test the application and verify that everything is still functioning as expected.

  • Jason is correct. You'd want to completely regression test your app against the server. This is one reason I wouldn't recommend CUs unless you are hit with a fix in one of them. Otherwise stick to SPs
