Hi folks, hope this is the correct forum. I have a Toshiba Netbook, NB200, I upgraded to 2GB ram with Windows 7 installed on it and would like to install SQL Server 2008 Dev. Edition on it. I've tweaked all the services and Aero stuff in Win. 7 to bring down the use of system resources (only using about 800MB of the 2GB now) and was wondering if it's okay to get SQL 2008 installed in a functional way, not for any heavy duty work, but if an idea for a project hits on the road and I don't want to carry my full powered laptop with me.
I was hoping anyone had insight into their experiences in general with running SQL 2008 on their netbooks.

Yeah, I run SQL Server 2008 Dev Edition on my Windows 7 laptop (3 Gigs RAM) work fine..

Ahh, but what about the netbooks, the much lighter/less powerful ones? That would be the main issue for me.

It looks like you meet the min system requirements for 2008 Developer Edition but your performance might be poor. You could always uninstall SQL if performance is terrible. Post back here if you do install and let the community know how the performance is on a Netbook.

That outclasses my laptop. I only have 2GB on it and am running SQL 2008 (and Server 2003). Performance is fine for what I am doing - development and administration.
Occasionally the ram available dips down to 300MB or so - but that is quickly and easily fixed (mem defrag).

I'm running the 2008 R2 Enterprise on a netbook in Win 7 with 1gb of RAM. It won't win any speed contests, but it functions, barely. Yes, you can do it. I'm getting ready to install SQL Prompt on to it as well. We'll see if that's the straw that breaks the camel's back.

If your netbook can handle it, get an extra GB of ram (or a new 2GB if you only have one slot), I definitely noticed a difference in just how windows performed. Also tweak all your services if you haven't done so (disable Aero/indexing/etc.) and that can help.

It will work. I have an HP mini, 1GB RAM, and only a 16GB SSD. I have SQL 2k8 dev, Office 2007 (partial), LiveWriter, and it works OK. Space is at a premium now, but I think that's my Live Mesh sync folders eating up too much space.

I've been running SQL Server with Word open while I worked on a document and used Snagit to do screen captures at the same time. No issues yet. I'm going to put Red Gate's SQL Prompt on it tonight when I get home. We'll see if I can do everything all at once. If so, I've got a new writing machine.

I've been tempted to get a netbook but can't justify a netbook over a laptop when the prices I have seen are nearly the same.
Can you help me with the pros and cons of buying a netbook over a laptop?

It's smaller & uses less battery than most laptops. Other than that...
under-powered, small keyboard, small screen
and I can't upgrade my memory. 1gb is the max. I think I'll be saving up for a new machine, probably a laptop, & maybe hand this one to the kids. It'll be like throwing raw meat into a tiger's cage.

For me, the main reason is one of size and convenience. I only use the basics on the road so no need for a full on laptop. Price also is a factor. If I lose a $350 netbook vs. an $800, I wouldn't feel quite so bad. Except with the prices dropping so low now for full laptops, even that becomes less of an issue.
