Moving to 2008 Instance from 2005 default instance

  • Currently I am researching our migration from Sql2005 - 2008. As a simple migration I was contemplating leaving SqlServer2005 installed and creating/installing a 2008 instance.

    Take a backup/restore to 2008

    map applications to boxname\instancename

    migrate jobs

    future: uninstall 2005

This seems like a very low risk path.

    ?

    thanks

  • Do you have a dev environment or QA (UAT) environment where you can do this first? This would give you the opportunity to note anything you have missed or anything that breaks.

  • I was actually on the 2008 install screen in our DEV environment, and decided a search and SQLServerCentral question for any known issues would be worth a day delay.

  • You could do it this way. You will find that most of us are a little more cautious when dealing with production changes.

However, as long as you have full backups and the original instance - it could be done. I would still caution that some testing be done before releasing the new db world to the end-users.

  • Very much agree on caution. That was the reason I was installing in DEV.

    thanks
