Isse with SQL server 2005 Upgrade Advisor

    Hi,

    I am having problem in running the sql server 2005 upgrade advisor wizard.

    I keep getting a message as "export server must be running Microsoft SQL Server 6.5"

    But the strange thing is i am running 2005 upgrade advisor then why it is asking me 6.5?

    I have a SQL server 2000 standard edition and SQL server 2005 Developer edition running on this machine.

    I just want to run this to see what suggestions the upgrade advisor comes up on my 2000 databases for moving to 2005 environment.

    Any help will be greatly appretiated.

    You sure it's pointing at the correct instance?

    You could try the SQL 2008 advisor (as it will identify the same issues as SQL 2005 advisor).

    What do you mean the correct instance?

    When i run the updrade adviser it tells me the following...

    I have attached the screen shot of the error message i am getting. Please see the attachment...

    For your info, i am running the upgrade advisor from a machine which has got 2000 and 2005 instances installed.

    You are running the wrong tool 🙂

    That is the upgrade wizard rather than upgrade analyzer. If I remember correctly, designed to upgrade from 6.5 or 7 to SQL 2000.

    You must download the analyzer from microsoft website (it's not included in SQL 2000 installation).

    Hi David,

    Thanks for the link but surprisingly, i have downloaded the setup file earlier from the same place. It does say the SQL server 2005 upgrade advisor tool but when i download and run it comes up with the same error message.... 🙁

    Any idea whats going on here?

    It looks like it is running the wrong application. I'm not sure why.

    I would try and install on a workstation (just ensure you have admin rights on the destination server) and run the scan remotely (or you can run the scan from another server).

    Thanks for the reply. I do have the administrative rights on the box i am running this tool. I have also tried on the other machines as well but no joy.

    Please let me know wether it does the same when you run it on your machine.

    Just run the tool on a server without SQL installed...you shouldn't have that problem then.
