I'm trying to install SQL Server 2008 x64 on a 64-bit install of Windows Server 2008. When I get to the point where the installer wants to run the Setup Support Files, it fails out with the following message:
Unable to open Windows Installer file '
\x64\setup\sql_engine_core_inst_loc_msi\1033\sql_engine_core_inst_loc.msi
Followed by
Windows Installer error message: The system cannot open the device or file specified.
I've looked online and have seen people with a similar issue but no resolution. Microsoft suggests it may be an antivirus issue but the server is new and we haven't installed the antivirus software yet: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970667
I can confirm that the file is in the path specified. I can also confirm that the installer seems to be corrupted because when I double click on it I get a message saying it can't be opened.
The installation files were extracted directly from an .iso downloaded off of MSDN just yesterday.
Could it be a bad build? Is there is some way to skip this part of the installation?
Any help would be appreciated.

So I found this article http://blogs.msdn.com/psssql/archive/2008/09/30/how-to-fix-your-sql-server-2008-setup-before-you-run-setup.aspx that I thought would fix the issue, but I applied the x64 SP1 and then the x86 CU1 for SP1 (there was no x64 version). I saw that the Programs and Features had Setup Support Files there yet the installation still tries to install it and fails.
I just don't even know what to say about this... someone please help...

If it helps I'm trying to install the Developer edition.
I don't want to go unnecessarily deep into the installer process to try to solve this. If there's some way I can command line install it and skip the Setup Support Files part I'd like to know how to do that.
Thanks,
John

I tried re-installing the 4.5 installer earlier, that didn't seem to help. Also, if I double click the referenced installer file I get
This installation package could not be opened. Contact the application vendor to verify that this is a valid Windows Installer package.

I think, first you need to clean earlier attempts from control panel, Then install Windows Installer first, Then install .Net Framework 3.5.1 separately as a prerequisite step to the SQL Server installation when installing on Windows 2008 R2. Then go for SQL installation.
I did successful installation of SQL 2005/2008 ENT 64 bit on Windows 2008 R2 64 bit.
More you can find here: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/955725/EN-US

I think your source(Installation file) is got corrupted. Try to download fresh copy of sql 2008 or use different copy of sql sever 2008 software and try it again.
I hope you can install.
Thanks

Hi Perry
no luck:
The installation package could not be opened
Contact the application vendor to verify that this is
a valid Windows Installer package.
Thanks
