Proactively monitoring and maintaining production databases.

  • Hi,

Is there any body who can give me simple nice scripts or any good tips for Proactively monitoring and maintaining production databases.

I know i can use sp_who2,sysprocesses,profiler,performance monitor but i never used it proactively and i am also asked in interview that do you have any script you can schedule for monitoring to get report of yesterday night?

    Thanks

How many servers do you have to monitor?

Are they SQL Server 2005 or 2008?

The solution depends on your answers.

  • I am upgrading SQL2000 to SQL 2005 ans SQL 2008,I will say you can say SQL 2000 and SQL 2005 for now.

They want YOU to provide the monitoring tools coming in day 1, sounds like a cracker jack operation to me. I would have turned that question back and asked what tools they currently have and then discussed some GAP analysis. To see where we could improve their toolset.

With 2005 and 2008 you have the default trace running but as it is configured it only pulls so much. And a larger question of what are they looking for.

  • It does,t matter from the day 1st or day end If you have any proactive monitoring scripts to schedule please let me know otherwise thank very much for you time.

  • What do they have already? What are they looking for? there are MANY things to trace, but only so much hardware to spare..

We don't usually have PerfMon running unless we are actively watching for a problem, we do have montitors that watch logins and DDL changes and whether the server is up and agent is up and some hardware monitoring provided by the hardware manufacturers..

What kind of monitoring are they looking for and how much of a server hit are they ok with?
