Sql 2008 client tools, will monitor 2005?

  • Where can I download the tools ( management studio ?). Will the tools install on a PC that already has 2005 tools? I presume the 2008 tools will monitor 2005 so I suppose I could uninstall the 2005 tools first if needed.

  • The tools are part of the 2008 media. I'm not sure they are distributed separately.

  • U require sql server installation i guess.

  • You do not need to install the server, just the client tools.

  • Thanks. I found a place to download the 6 month trial. Now to find out if it will install without uninstalling the sql 2005 tools. If so I can just uninstall the 2005 versions since I'm pretty confident the 2008 tools will manage earlier versions.

You need to have a valid installation of SQL Server 2008 in order to use the 2008 tools. That is, you must have a fully licensed version either on your workstation (Developer Edition), or on a server that you are connecting to.

If you have that - then I would recommend a side-by-side install. If you upgrade the tools, you will not be able to edit your SSIS packages or SSRS reports. You need SQL Server 2005 Business Intelligence Development Studioo available to edit, create and deploy 2005 versions.

  • Yes I did a side-by-side of the 2008 tools so the 2005 tools are still on my workstation. I'd be afraid to modify 2005 maintenance plans with the 2008 studio, at least until I do more research on that. With only one sql2008 server in our production group, and no plans to migrate any of the 2005 boxes right away, it's too early to do much more.
