Apologies if this is the wrong area for this. 😀
I have downloaded the Geminin CTP add in and have reviewed the Gemini team blog ([/url]). Got the August 2008 R2 CTP as well ready to make a virtual PC. Just one thing is missing Excel 2010! I have tried to get a CTP version but to no avail.
Any suggestions? Anyone noticed any good resources for Gemini out there?
Thanks.
Mark.

I must be doing something really wrong this week. The Microsoft connection site will not allow me to self nominate. That made me a bit grumpy. I spent most of last night googling. I figure that the CTP is not available and the beta is not ready.
I cant understand why Gemini is available as a CTP but I cant get Office 2010 which means I cant use Gemini. Have sent email to Microsoft Connection as I am struggling with this.
Cheers.

WHat process did you take exactly to nominate/get the R2 bits plus Gemini? We went through connect (for R2) and there was a questionairre for self nomination for Gemini. Following on from being accepted to the Gemini program, a specific (one time use) email was sent through with the details for downloading the appropriate bits (Office 2010 , sharepoint 2010 etc). It *did* take quite a few days between doing the survey, getting email #1 (re: Gemini) and then email #2 re: downloading and registering for the specific connect program.
In general, the best resources seem to be the managed forums, but I haven't spent a lot of time looking external to these as it's only just come public so people couldn't really write much up in detail.

Thanks.

While i have been poking around with Office 2010 and SQL 2008 R2 I noticed you need SharePoint 2010 to use Gemini. SharePoint was not included in my access to Office 2010. You might be waiting a little longer after you get access to the Office 2010 beta.

You should be able to use Gemini with just Office (actually just Excel) and the add-in. There is a 'SQL Server Gemini Add-In for SharePoint 2010' that's sued to 'publish the self-service models....created using the Gemini Add-In for Excel 2010.....'.
The quote are taken from the install docs for the SharePoint Add-In. If you check the chm for the Excel Add-In it makes no reference to a requirement for SharePOint 2010.

As Steve said. Gemini is an add in for Excel. These two together will allow you to play with Gemini.
Is 2008R2 required orr can I use Gemini to look at SSAS 2008?, SSAS 2005?
please say its compatible with 2005?

That is good to know. I just saw the SSAS MOSS Gemini piece in the SQL installation and drew the assumption that they were bound.
August 28, 2009 at 9:59 am
@ben - they *can* be bound, i'm guessing you saw the install option (it's an either-or option) to install either 08R2 (bits) or AS into a MOSS farm. The second option AFAIK is purely for disseminating/distributing the created workbooks with embedded Gemini (allow for processing of same on the server).
@mark-3 - i haven't fired up my install yet but thinking back to the tech preview, the client/add-in isn't tied to a cube per se, you bring the data in to excel and then generate your 'in memory cube' within the excel instance. So as far as 'supporting' AS05/08/08R2, I don't remember actually using an OLAP datasource, we used either flt files or straight relational, and as i said, brought it in to the Gemini engine and used it locally. Not saying you *can't* use an OLAP source, we just didn't, and I'm not sure if they are/are not supported.

Good to hear you got it. PM me with what you think. I ran (well, technically 'tried to run') ~ 52MM rows through it on Sat night/sun morning but it didn't want to play nice.

Load test on PowerPivot. (Project Gemini)
I have downloaded the 32 version of Excel 2010 Beta and PowerPivot.
To be short. Working with tables like an invoice table with 10 keyfields and 8 value fileds
and 10 look up tables with slicers etc is not to recommend. The performace is very slow even for record number (invoice lines) less than 100 000.
I can upgrade to 64 bit. But will it be faster??
Do any of you have more to add about the performce.
To load the data from SQL Server into the tables is fast.
