Question regarding Quad core and SQL Server

  • Hi,

I have a SQL 2005 Enterprise server that has four quad core Xeon processors (Intel E7420) so 16 logical CPUs recognized by Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition and noticing with our monitoring that the processor is constantly active and is averaging 11-15% usage.

I am concerned about this level of usage as the system is lightly used right now and the CPU usage is already at that level.

In comparison we have 3 other production systems running four AMD dual core processors (AMD Opteron 8222 SE), logical 8 CPUs with more users and noticing much lower averages...say 2-5%.

In process monitor I constantly see SQL server taking at minimum ~10% CPU and am wondering whether SQL Server isn't able to manage all these logical processors properly?

  • nah - shouldn't be the case. Been runing 16 cores for ages without issues. Get the performance dashboard and find out what queries are using cpu - or use process explorer to track system cpu. You can't really compare systems on that basis - too simplistic, bit like saying a mini does 40 mpg why does a ferrari only 8 ?
