I've been in IT for over 20 years now and I work in the solution architecture world. However, I'd like to move back into a technical role as I feel I was always happier in that area.
I've never had anything to to with SQL or Oracle for that matter and I wonder if someone might be able to give me some advice on how to get into such a technical field - particularly as I have no experience.
Has anyone got any personal experience of having made such a move or ever seen any evidence of it happening. I'm willing to pay for the training but I know that is only part of the battle.
Any advice greatly received.

Hey Paul,
I haven't personally made the move that you are discussing but have moved into management and then back out of because I liked the technical. The one thing that I would say to do is to dig into things a bit before committing down a specific road / area of focus. If you are interested in becoming a DBA then I would highly recommend buying the developer edition of SQL Server 2008 and walk through Books On Line, some of the tutorials, MS Online learning / hands on labs, etc and see if this is what you like. You can learn a ton through that stuff. Follow along on this site, read the articles.
If this world of SQL Server DBA / Developer work still interests you then you can work into a training program if appropriate at that point and you will already have a good foundation established.

Brent Ozar has series of blog posts on How to Get Junior DBA job that is pretty good found here[/url]. You probably aren't looking for a junior position, but with no experience it will probably be all you can get.
