Upgrade to 2 cpu license

  • Hello all,

is it possible to upgrade a sql2008 installation, that was licensed for 1 cpu, to use 2 cpus without having to reinstall?

I want to start using a SQL2008 version on a 1-cpu machine, and want to keep the possibility open to add another cpu later on.

I can imagine that I buy another license if I want to add another cpu to the server on which I host the sql service, but is this really the case, or do I have to reinstall?

    tia,

    Hans

  • This should be fine. AFAIK, there is not a separate codebase for SMP v uni-processor. Unlike the old NT servers, which used a different kernel, I believe that SQL code is the same.

  • Thank you for the swift reply Steve.

It actually triggered another question: can I install a 180-day evaluation version of SQL2008, and somehow activate that to a permanent version as soon as I have bought a license, or would I have to reinstall?

Right now I'm under a bit of time pressure, and need a SQL2008 running asap; waiting for the license to come in seems a waste of time.

    regards,

    Hans

  • you can upgrade from eval to a regular version if it has not expired (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ms143393.aspx)

    Edition upgrade is here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/cc707783.aspx

  • Thank you again for the swift reply Steve,

    you saved the day!
