We have an software installation which uses SQL Express 2005 on a stand alone server. Tivoli (TSM) refuses to back it up as it doesn't recognise it as a TDP (SQL Server 2005 installation). We thought of backing up the database using SSMS and then TSM can back up the flat files. However I cannot connect using SSMS; only the SQL Configuration Manager is installed though we can navigate to the .mdf and .ldf files.
Trawling through recent posts, we realised that we had to enable remote connections which we have done. However SSMS will still not connect.
Can anyone help us please?

You need to install management studio Express which I think also installs the SAC(surface area configuration tool) which you could use to enable local and remote, both TCP/IP and Named Pipes.

My colleague and I have installed SSMS Express successfully and the TSM backed up properly as well. My colleague thanks you; she was tearing her hair out with it. She says you must be a very nice person.
