Hi
I am trying to install SQL Server 2008 Developer Edition x64 on a Windows Server 2008 VM. I run the installer for a standalone installation and this works fine for the setup support rules bit. That passes ok but then I get this error:
TITLE: SQL Server Setup failure.
------------------------------
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control until the window handle has been created..
------------------------------
BUTTONS:
OK
------------------------------
How can I resolve this? I am getting 2008 R2 CTP but this is just a CTP. My download is from DreamSpark.

Did you found a solution? I'm stuck with the exact same problem.

Receiving same error:
SQL Server Setup has encountered the following error:
Invoke or BeginInvoke cannot be called on a control unit until the window handle has been created
Attempting to install SQL 2008 SP1 (SQLServer2008SP1-KB968369-x64-ENU.exe) on Windows 2008 R2 Server
Please advise,
Thanks

Hi,
The way I got this to work is to keep trying the installer. So work around the problem, really. I was advised by someone else in another thread I made on another site to ensure that the installer is the only active window open. So in Windows Server, I have not got any other windows displaying on the desktop, let alone open.
Good Luck
Thanks

Thanks for the idea
I attempted to run the SQL 2008 SP 1 installer from start/run with no other windows or applications open - failed again.
Then I checked the Windows 2008 features and installed the following:
Windows Process Activation Services
- .NET Environment
Prior to this (in order to do the initial SQL 2008 install) I had to install the .NET Framework 3.5.1 Features - .NET Framework 3.5.1
Reran the SP1 installer - ran successfully.

Had the same problem running up in a VM workstation.
Ran setup from Explorer, closed the Explorer window.
As each window popped up, clicked in the rightside tab and made sure the window had focus.
It's is running thru install as we speak.
😉 install completed successfully

I had this same problem with an ESX Guest. I enabled Remote access and logged in with MSTC and was able to complete the install.

Amazing... Closing the one windows explorer window I had open allowed my installation to proceed..

Similar solution for me: closed IE and VS2008 and the problem went away.

hmmmm...
try extracting the standalone installer with WinRAR or 7-Zip
and then run the file Setup.exe
😀

try right-click on setup.exe and choose "run as administrator" - worked for me 🙂

The only way that worked for me was to extract files from standalone installer (7zip) and run Setup.exe as administrator.

Hmm... after running the exe, closed Windows Explorer and the SP1 installation went fine.

Hi
Some installations don't work with 'normal' MSTSC. Use a console session to install the software. On ESX try using the ESX console. We use another remote software product called Remote Administrator
