Backups are generally smaller than their associated databases so you may get away with backing up the 10gb db to a 5gb drive. However you will probably also want to keep multiple backups and include transaction logs so your backup drive could run out of space. There are third party tools that make a good job of backup compresseion.
If you are doing backups as part of a maintenance plan you can add a cleanup task which will delete backups older than a chosed number of days.
Backups aren't archiving. They are complete copies of all data and configuration in the database. Archiving is usually a specific set of data.
Backup retention is down to your SLAs and other operational requirements. You can keep the backups on disk for a certain period of time and on tape for a different period of time. It depends on how quickly you might need to restore a backup and how far back you might need to go.
