Can any one explain me What is the difference between appending to a backup and overwriting the backup?

I want to know what happens when i append the recent backup file and when i overwrite the recent back up file? does both are same?

"Append" means to attach to the end of something else.
"Overwrite" means to write over something else.
So append will add your current backup on the the end of the other backups in a backup set. However, "overwrite" will write over the previous backup set, destroying its prior contents.
