RAID 5 vs. USB Backup Time

  • Our server (roughly 300G) had been backing up and sending backup files to an external hard drive connected via a USB 2.0 cable. Needing a more secure and reliable connection, we have since decided to send our backups to a SAN, RAID 5 configuration.

Our previous, USB-stored nightly backups took 4.5 hours to complete in total. Since we've gone to the SAN RAID 5, they now take 12.5 hours, which is a significant increase.

Am I missing a setting through the DB server, or does writing to RAID 5 typically take that long? Clearly, having a 12.5 hr. backup session isn't preferable. If it helps, we have 13G AWE configured on the SQL 2005 box. What would be the best way to increase the backup time to the SAN?

RAID 5 does have some rather substantial penalties on write performance. 4 hours to 12 hours seems extreme, but I'd believe it. The "wider" the RAID 5 set is, the worse the penalty.

Your lack of planning does not constitute an emergency on my part...unless you're my manager...or a director and above...or a really loud-spoken end-user..All right - what was my emergency again?

  • Thanks Matt, this certainly seems to be the case. I was suprised that it jumped from 4-5 hours to 12 hours just by changing the media. I suppose the trade off is that the data is more secure.
