For purely test and practice purposes, does replication work in slq server 2005 with the publisher and subscriber on the same machine, assuming i will have an instance for the publisher and an instance for the subscriber?

This was available in SQL Server 2000 so it maybe in 2005 in 2000 the base requirement was running the Agent with a domain account, I have not used replication for a while so check the BOL.
Kind regards,

Yes, they can all be on the same machine.
You are probably better of using virtual environments for this, it is cleaner, quicker and easy to set up but setting up two instances work as well.
Take your pick.

Having both publisher and scubscriber on the same instance is not a good idea as per high avilability model. However this will work.
We can configure for testing puerposes.
