Hi. Just started a new job and am in charge of creating new DW from ground up.
I have used PowerDesigner extensively in the past and woudl like to again for my
modeling and object
generation needs. Someone here thinks I should use Visio (we have this already) but I am not
seeing any good feedback online that it is viable as a replacement for PowerDesigner and
the like (Erwin etc). No repository etc...and looks like can only generate a script for the
entire db and not let me pick and choose the changes I want to generate. And so on...
Can anyone point me in a direction as to how I justify this? I'm wanting to explain why I
need it and so on but am not good at such things. Not seeing what I'm looking for online
thus far.
Thanks!

The way I've dealt with that kind of issue in the past is get a salesperson to do the work for you.
Get in touch with the company that makes the tool you want (Sybase, in this case), tell them your situation, just like you posted it here, and tell the salesperson you need something to convince your managers with.
It's their job to do that kind of thing, and they're usually good at it.
They should be able to send you an e-mail with case studies, feature comparisons, cost-benefit analyses, etc.
I've found that tactic very useful. And the salespeople usually love the opportunity.

Thanks! I honestly would not have thought of that approach
but it makes perfect sense. I'll also use that for my case for
purchasing Replicate1 for replicating data from the AS400 to SQL Svr.
