Why some login requires instance name

  • ;-)When I tried to login to one of the 2005 SQL SERVER, I typed server name “computer name”, then typed correct username and password. But didn’t allow to log in

    Then I tried

Server name as computername\instance name (as same computer name) this allowed me to login

My question, why some sql servers allows to login without instance name and others must have instance name?

    Thanks

  • it would depend on whether or not the server has been setup with an instance or not.

I've only seen this when logging in to a named instance. Is that true in your case?

  • Yes, I think that is the case
