Has anyone tried installing CU4 kb963036 on a multi-instance cluster?

  • Hello, I have been trying to install CU4 on my multi-node cluster in a test lab (5 nodes/w 4 instances). so far its been about 5hrs and the progress bar isnt even moving. first time out I rebooted because I thought it was hung, but it appears its just running extremely slow.

resource monitor is showing disk activity and network (lots of chattiness going on between the cluster nodes) CPU stays near 0 and memory stays around 9%. these are beefy boxes Dell R900 and should run very quickly. so far no error messages and I have no visibility into this installer to tell where it is at in the process. still have 4 more nodes to apply this to.

  • Ouch.

Did you have any problems with any of the other Cumulative Updates?

  • CU1 takes a long time on the cluster, but not nearly as long as CU4. I think it takes around 40 minutes for CU1 to apply. It takes approximately 5hrs with CU4. seems to be tons of chattyness going on between the nodes during installation like its constantly checking something on every node during the install process. I have no real visibility into what its doing however. I know its not isntalling on all nodes simultaneously because the files are not being updated on the other nodes. Which means I have to run this 3 more times at this point. Well at least I found a silent install command line parameter to keep me from having to babysit it.

  • And all the instances are on other servers than the one that you are trying to patch?

Is this in a majority node cluster?
