SSAS Cube to End user

  • I have a cube but How to display cube to the end user. What configration is required for te same.

  • Reporting Services and Excel are the first 2 that come to mind.

There are also tools like ProClarity/PerformancePoint depending on the budget.

WSS3.0 can display data, but you have to do all the plumbing.

Keep in mind the security model of the cube, and if the users are all on the same domain / network.

A large well dimensioned cube and MDX can be hard / confusing for users to work with.

We use ProClarity/PerformancePoint to help give users something easier to work with.

And we also build a lot of views for them that are good starting points for further analysis.

Give some thought to the end game, unless you just plan on everything being ad hoc.

  • Thanx..

  • Depends on what your users are happy with.

Most people seem happy with Excel. If you are using Excel 2003 and SSAS(2005) then you may need to add Microsoft OLE DB provider for Analysis Services.

With Excel you can create the connection and just sent the Excel file to people. Then if they have access they just open it up and its all there for them to play with.

    Mark.

  • I would suggest using Excel 2007 because of its usability. For example, all measures from all measure groups are put together in Excel 2003 while in Excel 2007 they are neatly seperated. With the relevant addon Excel 2007 can also perform basic datamining,

  • You may also want to check out our own front-end solution for Analysis Services, called Analyzer. It's easy for non-technical business users, easy for IT to install and deploy (100% zero-footprint with Internet Explorer as the client), it's fast, it scales, it's secure, and it looks good. Very good, in fact.

It can also be deployed via the SaaS model (you host), within SharePoint, or embedded in other apps via either iFrames or Web Services. It provides proven, mission-critical BI in very large and demanding environments. Companies like Citigroup, L'Oreal, WebTrends, and many others (>500) are using Analyzer as the answer to your question - "how to display cube to the end user". As far as the other part of your question - configuration requirements - since it's an IIS-based app, you can install it in 15 minutes and be up and running the same morning with several reports and dashboards you have created. Try the eval download, use the 5-minute QuickStart guide, and go to town with your cube data.
