Hi I was wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction... we are currently VNC'ing into our 2005 server to use the SSMS and all the other tools provided. In the past we were able to install the client tools from SQL 2K (enterprise manager, query analyzer etc) onto our workstations and then connect directly to the server.

We are using Red Gate toolbelt and quite happy about it.

Vnc'ing into the server is not ideal, the client tools are on the same disk that has SQL server just go through the install process on your machine and only select Client Tools and this will install them locally for you.

ok.. just what about licensing issues? On our desktops we do not use visual studio 2005... wouldn't we have to install that too?

You won't have to install VS2005.
As far as licensing goes, i think that if you have the correct CAL/process license for your server then you can install Client tools on any machine that connects to the server. Though you may want to check on the MS site as I do not really deal with Licensing at all..
