Hi Everybody,
Hope you are all doing well.
I don't know, whether it is the right forum category to post this question. If it is not please forgive me and move into corresponding category.
In our environment we have installed SharePoint 2007 with SQL Server 2005 RTM version (2005.90.1399) in failover clustered mode. Now we are in the position to upgrade SQLServer 2005 RTM version to stable version (2005.90.3042 - SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 2 or 2005.90.4035- SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3). Could you please explain the steps about how to proceed this?
Thanks and Regards,
Prakash

I'd say the best thing to do is download the service pack and carefully read the installation instructions! We've done several service packs on clusters and standalone machines and most have gone smoothly if you follow the recommendations. On a cluster you install the service pack on the active node but also need to install the client components part of the service pack on the inactive node.

Ditto to what DNA said. Here's the ReadMe file for SP2.
Hope this helps.

Hi,
Just need one clarification, if we have sql server 2005 rtm version and sharepoint site is running on that. and if we upgrade sql server to sql server2005 sp2. will there be any data loss , or the existing databases will remain intact.
thanks

I don't know about Sharepoint is affected by SS SP2, but I haven't noticed any data loss on my servers from installing SP2.
In fact, there shouldn't be data loss from any SP install. However, it is always a good idea to back up your DBs before the SP install just to be sure.
You can't recover if you have nothing to restore to. And if there is data loss, contact MS right away.

Hi,
When we try to install SP2, the installation wizard collects the information upto the Authentication dialog, after that it throws an error, like installation of KB921896 failed, and it shows the dialog to send the error report to Microsoft. Please send some article or advise about how to install SP2 on clustered mode?

Prakash

Please post the full text of the error. We need it in order to advise you further.
The information we posted previously should be all you need for a successful install. If it's not working, something else is going on.
You can also call Microsoft for assistance. They still support SQL 2005.

Hi,
I got the following information from "HotFix.log" file as
03/31/2009 15:15:16.204 Exit code for passive node: HCT-MSSQL-001 = 11203
03/31/2009 15:15:16.360 The following exception occurred: No passive nodes were successfully patched Date: 03/31/2009 15:15:16.360 File: \depot\sqlvault\stable\setupmainl1\setup\sqlse\sqlsedll\instance.cpp Line: 3422
As well as from "Summary.txt" file,
No passive nodes were successfully patched
Exit Code Returned: 11009
In Passive node, the "Summary.txt" file has the following
Summary
Product instances were disqualified due to build version mismatch
Exit Code Returned: 11203
Please help me solve this.

Prakash

Prakash, look at the Summary.txt error more closely. It says your versions are mismatched. The service pack won't work if your editions are different on the cluster nodes. An example would be one node having Enterprise & the other having Developer. Also, if you're using an Eval copy on one or if one is SQL 2000.
Check the server / node this occurred on. Find out what version it really is. Then compare it with the other node.
Let us know the results of all checks.

Hi,
I got one link (http://weblogs.sqlteam.com/geoffh/archive/2008/04/15/Breakable.aspx) about the same problem . I will try it and come back.

DNA
I have a doubt
=================
I'd say the best thing to do is download the service pack and carefully read the installation instructions! On a cluster you install the service pack on the active node but also need to install the client components part of the service pack on the inactive node.
==================
This means patching the unclustered SQL components like workstation component, reporting service, Notification service, Integration service on the passive clustered node?
or
installing only workstation component on the passive node?
As far application perspective MOSS 2007 is compatible with any higher version servicepack from SQL 2005 SP1.
