Different backup/restore sizes

  • Hi everyone,

Why is it that my backup size is twice as big as the restored database? What happens during restore that makes this to happen? Thanks.

  • Dp you perhaps have two or more backups in one file? If you backup to a file with an existing backup and don't use the WITH INIT option, the new backup is appended.

  • Tx GM, I can confirm that this is not the case. I made a fresh backup to a new file with the overwrite option. I then restored from that backup to another server.

  • What are the sizes that you are seeing? Include the sizes for the backup, all data files (mdf/ndf) and the log files (ldf).
