I have to install an application on a windows server 2003 terminal services. This application uses SQL server 2005 express edition as the Database. The question is should I install SQL before I Install terminal services or After. I know that I have to install the application in Terminal services install mode so that several users can RDP in and use the app.

In my experience, applications that use SQL Express usually include SQL Express in their install package. You might want to contact the app vendor to verify this before you go installing SQL Express separately.

Okay, then.

Off the top of my head, I don't know of any issues between Terminal Services and SQL / SQL Express that would require one to be installed before the other.

Anyone else have any thoughts on this?

I didn't recall Terminal Services being a separate install in 2003. I thought it was simply a feature to enable as part of Windows components. As such - I would usually get my Windows components lined up first (so that the patching is right before I go installing anything extra). Still - like Brandie mentioned - I don't think there is any dependency between TermServ and SQL Express, so install them in any order you wish. Just be sure to re-patch/revalidate the patches once you're entirely done.

I believe that it's part of the standard install, unless you need the license server component.

From other sources I have come to the conclusion that it is better to install all windows required components first and then install any apps later. Just remember to install any apps later in Install mode.
