Log File Viewer

  • Is there a way to 'Filter' the Log File Viewer or stop loading the events, before it displays everything under the sun?

  • You do have quite limit scope to filter events. For example, you can modify security audit levels from an instance properties and configure SQL Server Agent Error Logs.

My understanding is the logs are used for sa. System administrators need all information on the activities of database servers. Although an sa can filter his display, but all activities need to be saved.

  • When I open the viewer I have to wait 4-5 minutes before I can engage any filtering. What I'd like to do is stop the viewer from loading, so that I can can at least set the date range in the filter.

Yes, sometimes I need to see everything, but not always.

  • I generally find it much easier and faster to open the error log in a good text editor (ultraedit, notepad++, etc)

  • Could these text editor be used to open current log file?

  • Sure. That's how I used to always read my log files.

Open in ultra edit and set the editor to reload changes any time it got focus.

  • I'm not familiar with Ultra Edit, but will give it a look over. I'm more familiar with PSPad & NotePad+ - don't know why I didn't think of these.

    Thanks

  • Ultraedit's not free. If you're happy with the other text editors, use those
