Restore user database backup to a different build of SQL Server

  • Hi,

Has anybody ever experienced restoring live SQL Server 2000 database on Enterprise Edition to Standard Edition ?

    What are the implications ?

We have one of our live environments on Enterprise edition which needs to be moved to Standard edition.

    Why ?

Because we have all environments on Standard edition and company policy to go for Standard edition only so we need to move one database from Enterprise Edition to Standard as the machine having Enterprise edition is very old and going to be decommissioned.

Backup/Restore works fine but I wanted to know if anyone has done it and later on came across any issues.

    Many thanks,

    V

  • To me, there shouldn't be any problems if you move databases of same version from one edition to the other edition, as these are user databases.

  • You won't if you don't use special version feature like the ONLINE keyword in 2k5 which is available in enterprise and developer only. I do suspect that there's might be some in 2k but I'm less familiar with it than 2k5.

Otherwise than that, don't forget to transfer logins, jobs, maintenance plan (those cannot be script easily), model database if you used it as a template, history information from msdb if it's important to you.
