Is there some undocumented max file size for compressed folders on server 2003? We see SQL 2005 backup job fail writing to compressed folder when database is 20GB or so.

There is no such limit for compressed folder. The backup might be failing due to no response from the disk for sometime.

Thanks for the reply. If it helps anyone, here's the error message:
The process cannot access the file because another process has locked a portion of the file.
I know what that sounds like, but when we remove the compression on the folder, the backup works.

Well, shoot. Sorry everyone, should have googled this a little longer before posting. I found confirmation that others have had this problem with large backups in compressed folders:
