We have couple Access and VB applications running on 5 computers. These applications use either OLEDB or ODBC to connect to a SQL database. Do the 5 computers need 5 CALs' to run the apps? Thanks.

You either need 5 CAL's or a per-processor license (which will cost more than a server license and 5 CAL's).

Especially since Standard Edition comes with 10 CAL's and Enterprise Edition with 25 CAL's.

Thanks.
Another question: when I have one SQL server license on a 4 CPU server, is it all I need as long as I have enough SQL CAL to cover the workstations?

Yes, server/CAL licensing does not care about the number of processors you have in the server.
I would suggest you go to the MS website and read about the licensing if you want additional details.

That's for an instance. It gets weird with different editions, instances, VMs, etc. And it's always changing.
Definitely call MS if you have questions.
