If I buy an 08 license, can I use that to run 2005?

  • I know with many MS products you can buy the new version and it lets you use the old version even though your license is for the newer version.

Does this hold true for SQL Server?

If I buy SQL Server 2008 per processor, can I use that license to install SQL Server 05 (same edition of course, standard to standard, etc...)?

  • You probably can, but why not install 2008 and run the databases in compatibility 90 if you really need to do that?

You'd have to check with Microsoft to be certain, but I don't think there's any reason you couldn't run 2005 Standard on a 2008 Standard license.
